Manual of Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery has almost replaced open surgery for many interventions all over world. Laparoscopic surgery has been associated much less complications as well as less hospital stay. In developed countries this is often the intervention of choice when surgery is needed for the surgical disease of chest and abdomen.
- World Laparoscopy Hospital, in collaboration with Delhi Laparoscopy Hospital, Pvt, Limited, has developed a programme for training and research in laparoscopic surgery, aiming to improve the use of laparoscopy in whole world. These activities will include the development of Manual in minimal access surgery
- Providing practical guidelines for laparoscopic training programmes endorsed by SAGES and recognised by WALS
- Conduction and evaluation of skill of participants of training programmes
- Assessment of research needs and conduct of research programmes in the field of minimal access surgery
Laparoscopy at developing country bears many challenges: from the availability and condition of the material used to the experience and skills of the minimal access surgeons. However, there is still a major gap in the implementation of laparoscopic surgical methods in under resourced settings, often due to restricted availability or access of the equipment and lack of laparoscopic training.Providing comprehensive practical guidance, applied to the settings at the grass root level has long-term relevance and results in the delivery of better health care for poor and needy. The plan is to develop a manual that is unique in the sense that it is mainly aimed at settings at small infrastructure.
The contents of the manual will be decided upon by the editorial group of World Journal of Laparoscopic Surgery; possible authors will be defined and invited to contribute to the manual of minimal access surgery; comments from local specialists will also be included. The specific multi authored chapters will provide practical guidelines for laparoscopic surgeons based on the available evidence, including cost-benefit assessments and recommendations for applicability in developing country. Guidelines for authors on how to prepare each chapter will be developed at World Laparoscopy Hospital. The contributions will be peer reviewed and final acceptance decided upon by the editorial committee and by the chief editor Dr. R.K. Mishra.
General chapters of this manual will be:
* The current status of laparoscopy in the different country
* Minimal requirements of basic laparoscopic equipment to perform laparoscopic procedures
* Training for surgeons and gynaecologists for laparoscopic surgery in developing countries
